Scadoxus puniceus

African Paintbrush Lily – Perhaps one of the strangest and coolest blooming plants in our collection. This flowering bulb is native to South Africa, and has proven to be cold hardy in our climate over the course of the last 28 years. In early spring, before the foliage has even emerged, a thick stalk errupts from the bulb and opens up to expose a massive puff-ball of neon orange. It truly is a sight to behold, and will undoubtably make you the envy of your neighbors! These impressive flower stalks persist for around two weeks, and are then overtaken by the glossy bright green foliage as the flower head turns to seed. Over time, the bulb will slowly reproduce and create a large clump, giving you more flowers to appreciate every year. Our original patch was planted as a single bulb in 1998, and is now about 3.5 feet wide! If you’re a lover of weirdo plants, then you need to add this to your collection. Plant in full shade and in well-draining soil. Although it looks best when its well watered, it can tolerate short stints of drought.
