Styphnolobium affine

Eve's Necklace – Depending on how you train it, this Texas native can either be a shrub or small tree. Through most of the year, delicate round foliage covers the thin branches. In mid spring, small wisteria-like pink flowers appear, leaving a pleasant floral scent hanging in the air. These blooms are later replaced by long dark seed pods that hang tantilizingly from the canopy, looking very similar to a beaded necklace. Take a lesson from Eve, and don't eat this fruit, because the seeds are toxic! This plant prefers to be planted in part shade, and is extremely drought tolerant once established.
