Cardboard Palm – This broadleafed plant is actually not a palm at all, but rather belongs to a family known as Cycads, which are prehistoric plants that far predate palms. Zamia furfuracea produces large thick fronds, each about 2 feet long, with an interesting cardboard-like texture. Unfortunately, it is not cold hardy in our climate, so it is strictly a container plant that must get moved indoors during winter frosts. Keep out of direct sunlight, as this will create a 'sunburn' on the leaves that does not fade. Plant in well-draining soil mix and ensure that the container has a drainage hole. Cardboard Palm is reliably drought tolerant, but appreciates some supplemental watering during the hottest parts of summer.
